Like a lot of projects on a boat, it is not uncommon to run into the "Laws of unforeseen circumstances". The owner wanted an anchor winch installed. The problem was that the locker, although wide, was only about 16" deep. This looked, at a first askance glance to be a straightforward project. If the anchor locker floor could be cut away, the locker would then extend down to the bottom of the hull. I called the builder, and asked if this was the case, and they said "yes, and no structural issues would arise, the locker liner is part of the deck structure". You can see in the picture below, the original locker had hangers for a Danforth anchor (not my favorite type), and the pipe structure is where the anchor shank went. You can see on the right aft side of the locker a wee drain hole.

So off we go. I pop off the Beckson plate, and I'm chagrined to find the space below is full of water. What the heck is this? The only thing I am sure of, is that this is not likely the fresh water storage tank for the boat. I call the builder again, and tell them my problem. No problem they say, someone just forgot to drill the weep hole. When you cut the floor out, just drill the weep hole at the bottom center near the keel, and the water will drain to the amidships bilge. Okay, I can do this, and I have the technology. I drop my cool little Rule pump into the hole, and pump out the water.

I tape off the cut out, and Josh (a most excellent glass guy) is in charge of getting the floor out, grinding the edges back, and gel coating the exposed hull. With an assortment of ugly "Freddy Krueger" style tools, the locker floor is removed exposing the vessel's entrails.

You can now see the locker minus the floor below. The edges were ground back, and the pipe structure has been removed, The locker is now 36" deep at the aft end. But oops, see that grey blob hanging down on the right hand side? The good news is that we know there was enough hull bonding putty being used, the bad news was that it was very difficult to remove. Some improvised tools, a very sharp chisel, and several hours of hard work cleaned it off the hull.

Looks pretty good now in the picture below. Everything is now smooth and white. It's not quite factory, but making it look good was not that hard. You can now see the new weep hole drilled into the aft bulkhead. It's a nice hole if only it went somewhere. Seems the builder's provided advice, was not quite on the money. The place where they said to drill the hole, has a longitudinal stringer behind it. Wait, it gets better. When the hole was drilled, I had it done with a 1 1/8" bit. I had to do this because I needed to seal the exposed wood edges with epoxy. So when the bit hit the stringer, there was about 1/4" gap on each side of the stringer that was open to the next compartment. I stick my wire fish into one side, and swizzle it around, and I hear water splashing, and the same thing on the other side. Now, if we had some ham, we could have a ham sandwich, if we had some bread, or if we had a drain hole, the water could drain into the next compartment, if it had a drain hole.

The last twist to this story I haven't mentioned yet, is there was an anchor locker drain fitting going through the hull about 1" below the weep hole that was drilled into the locker floor. The stub of the fitting protruded about 1/4" into the inside making it impossible to attached a hose to it. The Solution to the problem here is to just ignore it, drill a weep hole in the locker floor, and get the boat sold before anyone notices.

So lets review this. We had a weep hole in the anchor locker, that was draining water into a sort of sealed compartment, a through hull fitting that was never connected, and couldn't be, water was where it shouldn't be in two compartments, and the builder really wasn't very knowledgeable about the product. The "Laws of unforeseen circumstances" have raised their many ugly heads here.

Here is the finished locker, and it turned out very nice. It currently has 400' of rode in the locker, and it barely reaches the floor of the original locker. A piece of starboard was attached to the back of the locker to cover the area where the pipe thingy was, and because the original anchor locker never had a tie off point for the bitter end, I thought it was prudent to add one. What's next is to have a little chute made to direct the rode back about 8" into the deeper portion of the locker, and to pull the winch wire, another odious task on this boat. The wire length needed is almost twice the length of the boat, and needs to be a #2. This is another place where some design forethought would have helped everybody. I have now been waiting for over two weeks for words of advice from this builder on how to correct the trapped water problem. I am hoping they will rise to the occasion, and not be weep holes about this.

Hanging out with family in Colorado

Visiting family in Loveland

We have vacationed in Colorado a lot over the years because we have family here. It was usually a 4-day weekend and we drove straight through (900 miles on highway 70 from St. Louis to Boulder--through Kansas!). It was surreal to spend three days driving and then get to stay a MONTH! The Colonel was eager for some high-altitude bike rides and I was looking forward to the wonderful grocery stores and restaurants. We will spend most of our time based at Boyd Lake State Park (see Boyd Lake Campground Review).

My bike riding was a little more low key. There is a bike path along Boyd Lake and it joins up with a network of bike paths through Loveland.

The campground doesn't have wifi, but our T-Mobile is working well enough to watch TV. To conserve data, my bike rides were usually into town for coffee and to upload photos. Chai from scratch--2 pumps, no whip!

A friend was up in Breckenridge, so we unhooked the car and headed up the mountain (Sorry, Odin the Winnebago. We should have taken you to Dillon Lake Campground. We weren't thinking! Next year.)

And then Breckenridge Brewery for lunch. (He earned it.)

On our way back we saw some crazy $h!t driving up the mountain on a Friday. Pickup pulling a 5th wheel pulling a trailer! Little Class C pulling a horse trailer. Class C pulling a pontoon boat! Craziness at this altitude! (Sorry, we were so shocked, I didn't get any pics!)

He's at it again. Remember, that 1198 ft of climbing AFTER starting at 5000 ft.

Boyd Lake Campground was full for the weekend, so we took the opportunity to pop down to Lyons to visit more family. Interestingly enough, when I called the Meadow Park campground host, she said it would be grand reopening weekend (after the Lyons flood) and locals stayed free. "We're kind-of locals!" We slid in after giving our family member's name and address. Woo hoo! (see post Lyons campground review to see more pictures and to see if we ever found the lost flip flop).

You can't walk around Lyons without a dog! This is our "niece" Scarlet. Luckily, her Mom isn't on FB so she won't know about the swim in the river! "No really. Mom always throws me rocks to chase in the river! It's totally fine!"

This is a great campground because we can walk to our family's house, the coffee shop or the grocery store. You'll usually find me camped on the patio at The Stone Cup while The Colonel is out looking for steep gradients...

On the way into town, we saw a large Class A at this tiny gas station. Yep, we needed diesel and the price was $2.19 a gallon so we swung through on the way back to Loveland! (Did you notice old-style gas stations used to have the pumps parallel to the road and now they're perpendicular?)

I went for several walks while we were at Boyd Lake State Park the first time and decided that I wanted a mountain view out our large front windows this time, so here's spot #2:

We though that after Labor Day the State Parks would slow down, but not here. This park is wildly popular with locals and boaters on weekend. However, the Park Ranger took pity on us and extended our stay (from 14 days every 45 days) by 5 weekdays--but only if we were GONE by the next weekend.

Feeling a little guilty about our lack of museum/culture lately, we scooted over to Benson Sculpture Park before we left. Loveland is known for their sculpture parks and we were advised this was the best, but I wish I'd left time to visit more! Check out the separate blog post (special-report-benson-sculpture-park.html). Apparently, we're saving the hike up Devil's Backbone for next year...

With Brenda

There is mist and just a bit of rain in the air today, but it is very calm and so putting in on bigger waters is a good option. Brenda and I put the canoe in at the bottom of the deep ravine on the north side of Elliot Bay and paddle west, staying close to the salt water shoreline. She comments on how clear the water is, the bottom visible from 8 or 10 feet, if not more. A big roller wake comes past once or twice from far out boats. They have to stay out from these shallow waters and the trip is quiet. The tide is high and as we paddle along the shore of Discovery Park, the boulders that are present are, for the most part, well submerged. We spot 3 osprey in the trees. They should be getting ready for a long migration to South America. Maybe the current salmon run has brought them here. We stop briefly at the lighthouse, where I recover a huge block of foam and toss it over the fence where it won't blow away and a groundskeeper can get at it.

We talk about nature, and art, which is what we really have in common.

Then, we continue north and into the ship canal, where we spot a kingfisher and then a 4th osprey as we pass under the railroad bridge. The lock is just beginning to close, but the lockmaster hails us and opens the doors again, and we race up against the current. I've never had them hold the doors for us before. It is a short ride today at high tide, no more than 6 or 8 feet. As usual, we're sent out first, a safety issue with toy ship drivers sharing the concrete enclosure. Now we are in industrial waters with tugboats and fishing fleet. Being in the midst of working boats such as a large fishing fleet is just as visually stimulating as remote wilderness. We stop briefly so that Brenda can take close-up photographs of the bumper on the bow of a large tug, and then head into Fishermen's Terminal, which is where we begin the mile long portage back to Elliot Bay. But first, fish and chips at the best fish and chips stand in town.

It starts raining in earnest when we get back to the water and the last half mile of the trip is soggy. It is a warm day, and it just doesn't matter. Nothing much matters on a day like this other than making sure to experience it.
